John, I know you’ve seen a lot of emails from me on the radical plot to reshape our constitution – Article V – lately. I’m honestly worried at the sheer number of states making new calls, and how quickly we’re seeing these bills move through state legislatures.
We’ve barely made it into this year’s legislative sessions, and we’ve already seen 16 states introduce calls for Article V. If you remember, I wrote to you just last week and only 9 states had made similar calls.
And these resolutions are moving through the legislatures fast, with multiple states holding votes every week. Just this past week, 5 states voted on Article V resolutions.
Here’s a reminder of what’s at stake: our right to peaceful protest, freedom of religion, our right to privacy – essentially the Bill of Rights.
I know how this might sound. Surely, the entire Bill of Rights can’t be at stake, right? Even though it may sound far-fetched, it is entirely possible. That’s because once enough states call for Article V, there are no rules governing what they can do.
As I write, wealthy special interests are spending millions to pass Article V resolutions across the country. These same special interests will then be able to use their money to influence legislators if an Article V Convention is called, rewriting the Constitution to their own benefit.
If we’re going to stand a chance against all the new calls for Article V, we’re going to have to pull out all the stops. Only Common Cause can deliver the powerful, multi-state response needed to shut down Article V calls across the country.
John, our strategy to stop Article V works. Just look at our track-record – with your help, we stopped Montana’s call for a Convention by a single vote just this week! And before that, we rescinded them in New Jersey, Illinois, Colorado, New Hampshire, Delaware, New Mexico, Maryland, and Nevada – in addition to stopping nearly 150 new calls for a convention each year in states across the country.
But even with our grassroots network and proven strategy, we’re struggling to keep up. Every day that goes by means a new threat of Article V we have to stop.
Meanwhile, the conspirators behind Article V are seeing Common Cause winning, and are doubling down on their efforts – putting more money into their fight against us.
We need your help to keep up with the new calls for an Article V Convention, and stand against our well-funded opposition. This isn’t a fight we can afford to lose, John. Can I count on your support?
You can make a critical difference today by investing in our state-by-state grassroots work to DEFEND the Constitution and STOP Article V.
Standing with you,
Viki Harrison, Director of Constitutional Convention & Protect Dissent Program
