This report describes substantiated incidents of inmate sexual victimization perpetrated by another inmate or by staff. It presents data on the incidents of sexual victimization, such as location and time of day. It also provides characteristics of the victims and perpetrators of the victimization. The report details services provided to the victim and consequences for the perpetrator. In part, it fulfills BJS?s mandates under the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA; P.L. 108?79).

"Victim Service Providers in U.S. Counties, 2017 [ [link removed] ]"

This brief Just the Stats report presents findings on the organizations that served victims of crime or abuse as their primary function or had dedicated staff or programs to serve victims, based on data from BJS?s National Census of Victim Service Providers, 2017. The report uses maps to display the rates of victim service providers per 100,000 residents for U.S. counties in the 50 states and the District of Columbia and the rates of victims served per 1,000 county residents. * consulting and collaborating with criminal justice agency representatives including state, tribal, and local governmental officials, consumers, and/or personnel within the Department of Justice to advise about ongoing and established statistical studies or other projects where extensive methodological or subject-matter advice and interpretation is required
* performing various statistical data collection activities, such as preparing, processing, analyzing, and coordinating core and periodic data collections
* ensuring the effective collection of statistical data and the use of appropriate collection systems to satisfy immediate, mid-range, and long-term statistical data collection requirements
* managing, leading, or performing work applying statistical theories, techniques, and methods for gathering, studying, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting on statistical information
* preparing a variety of statistical products, questionnaires, reports, presentations, and other written documentation that support statistical findings and dissemination for audiences including the criminal justice community, Congress, Department officials, and the general public.

BJS participated at the 2023 American Correctional Association Winter Conference? [ [link removed] ]

BJS Director Alexis R. Piquero, PhD, and BJS statisticians Amy Lauger, Rich Kluckow, Ann Carson, Laura Maruschak, Emily Buehler, and Michael Field participated in the annual American Correctional Association Winter Conference, January 27?31, in Orlando, Florida. BJS statisticians hosted a workshop on "PREA, COVID-19, and Maternal Health: New Findings and Data Collection Efforts from the Bureau of Justice Statistics". Also, BJS hosted a workshop on newly released findings on substantiated incidents of sexual victimization reported by adult correctional authorities. BJS statisticians and RTI International staff discussed the National Inmate Survey (NIS) and demonstrated use of the survey instrument at BJS?s exhibit booth.
