John --

This weekend, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy, which continues to inspire generations of Americans.

Overcoming mountains of obstacles, Dr. King led a movement inspired by peace, love, respect, and equality for all. When he saw injustices against the African American community, he didn’t complain. He didn’t lash out. He didn’t seek violence. Instead, he organized and led one of the most successful non-violent movements in the world to achieve legal equality for African Americans.

Dr. King’s mark on this country stretches across all parts of our society, but this weekend, let’s remember his clear-eyed vision of a more equal and just world. We have this opportunity to build the kind of country we aspire to together: one that unites around love, family, community, and common decency.

It starts with each of us. Remember that we are all members of this community and this shared planet. We may disagree. We may worship differently, love differently, or look differently -- but we’re all human. We can choose to be decent and kind to one another, instead of hate. We can choose to respond to divisiveness with an open heart, an open mind, and understanding. This is how we can bridge the divides in our country, heal wounds, and move forward.

It’s not always easy to do what’s right -- but it’s necessary. As you go about your plans this weekend, I ask that wherever you are, whether it’s at the grocery store, church on Sunday, the local high school basketball game, anywhere you go, show respect and heart to all.

Standing Tall for All,

J.D. Scholten
