Legislative Update

Friends and Neighbors,

Tax season is upon us and while that?s usually one of the worst parts of the year one important step is to be sure you?ve filed for your property tax refund on any property you have registered as your homestead. You can find out more about the Homestead Credit Refund here [ [link removed] ]. If you meet the requirements, it is a great way to offset some of your tax liability that seems to be ever-growing.

On Monday the House DFL passed language [ [link removed] ] to provide driver?s licenses to undocumented immigrants with zero guardrails to make sure these documents are not being used for anything outside of driving and car insurance. While there is a strong argument for public safety that this bill could provide by allowing these drivers to get insurance and take some driver training courses, I believe the lack of markings or data sharing to prevent these from being used for voter registration is unacceptable.

This adds to their continued agenda to create distrust in our elections system. HF 28 [ [link removed] ] is a bill that will return the right to vote to those convicted of a felony while still on probation. Currently, those individuals get their right to vote back after they have completed their entire sentence. I am sympathetic to the desire of everyone to have their voice heard in elections and if this were a better bill, I could see voting for it. Unfortunately, as it stands with zero guardrails and nothing to prevent voter fraud, I had to vote against it.

In the Education committee we heard a lot about mental health in schools with House File 8 [ [link removed] ]. This is a hugely important issue that regrettably our Democrat friends are missing the mark on. We can all agree there is a mental health crisis affecting our young people that we must find compassionate solutions to address. Instead, this bill just creates quotas and government bloat in an attempt to throw more education dollars at the problem. I hope as this and other proposals head through the committee process at a reasonable speed we will be able to create meaningful solutions for our students.

This week at the capitol Minnesotans for Health and Parental Rights [ [link removed] ] held their annual rally. The rotunda was absolutely packed with families and individuals from all over the state who made the journey to St. Paul to make sure their voice was heard. Leaders in the movement as well as some of my House Republican colleagues got up to speak and share a vision for the future of Minnesota that protects parents' rights. I was able to speak with a few constituents I saw at the rally, and it was great to hear their dedication to defending the future of their children. I will always stand with parents who want to provide a safe and healthy life for their children.

Children are the future of Minnesota and organizations like this have an important role in shaping what our state will look like. I hope our work in the legislature will serve this goal of providing a great state for our descendants long into the future. Friday morning I attended Eggs & Issues with the Brainerd Chamber of Commerce. We had a great conversation about the topics that are most prevalent in district and how these can be addressed in St. Paul. This weekend I will be attending two BPOU conventions in Hubbard and Cass counties. These will be a great opportunity to hear from all of you and is a great place for people who are looking to get more involved.
