11 months of war in Ukraine

Dear John,

Friday, 24 February will mark one year since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and the beginning of the fastest growing refugee crisis since the Second World War. Today, more than one third of the population of Ukraine have been forced to flee their homes.

UNHCR has been working in Ukraine since 1994, so we have had teams on the ground from day one and a close working relationship with authorities and local partners. As people fled into neighbouring countries, we made sure to adapt our response and provide support and protection wherever it is needed.

To date, we have given assistance to 4.3 million people impacted by the war in Ukraine. This includes: emergency supplies, like blankets, sleeping bags and warm winter clothing, generators to provide heat and power medical facilities, cash assistance, legal support, counselling, shelter and house repairs.

Tamara's town of Chernihiv in northern Ukraine suffered 30 days of intense shelling, missiles and rockets, which left a trail of death and destruction. But thanks to UNHCR’s shelter programme, they received new windows, roofs and doors to secure their home and help keep warm during the freezing winter.

Please help a family like Tamara’s by making a donation to UNHCR. We will keep working to support Ukrainian families for as long as it’s needed, but we cannot do it without generous donations from people like you. Join us today.

Thank you,

Breno Valentini
