The solar industry won't stop asking for more.

Reuters (02/0123) reports: "A rule banning wind and solar energy producers from participating in power markets that provide critical support for the electricity grid for much of the Midwest is outdated and based on “stale” information, the solar industry has told the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) on Tuesday filed a complaint with FERC against the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), arguing the grid operator is discriminating against renewable energy sources by keeping them from participating in markets that help maintain grid reliability and bring systems back from power outages. By keeping renewables from those markets, the industry said the grid operator is giving a competitive advantage to traditional energy sources like fossil fuels."

Another reason to get behind Mayor Pete's solar powered jet future.

The Wall Street Journal (02/02/23) reports: "Airfares have eased from last year’s highs. Now a resurgence in jet-fuel prices is threatening to push them higher again. Prices for the kerosene-based product have been climbing since December, propelled by diminished supplies after winter storms shut down refineries. Swelling demand has also pushed up prices, as millions of Chinese travelers took to the skies to celebrate the Lunar New Year and newfound freedom from Covid restrictions. The global jet-fuel price index maintained by S&P Global is up 20% since Dec. 7, while prices on the U.S. East Coast are up about 77%. While global demand for gasoline and diesel has already recovered from its pandemic downturn, jet-fuel consumption is just now taking off. The International Energy Agency forecasts that jet fuel will drive 44% of the 1.9 million barrels a day of global oil-demand growth that it expects this year, after accounting for less than 6% of demand last year, according to research firm Rystad Energy. "

The wind business isn't going so great. Siemens Gamesa's onshore wind turbine orders fell by 46% over the past year and the cost of those turbines increased by 25%. They also didn't receive a single offshore wind turbine order last quarter.

Here's a green energy project that makes sense.

Mining Dot Com (2/02/23) reports: "South African coal producer Seriti Resources has inked a long-term agreement to build the country’s largest wind farm to power its operations. The 155-megawatt (MW), 4 billion rand ($236 million) project by Seriti’s green energy unit, Seriti Green, will be located in the nation’s coal-rich Mpumalanga province. Construction of the wind farm will take about two years and it is expected to generate about 75% of the electricity Seriti needs to run its coal mines in South Africa. The energy produced at the plant is also slated to be cheaper — as much as 40% less expensive — than buying electricity from Eskom, the company said. “This agreement is a meaningful step that further cements the significance of the inclusion of renewable energy through Seriti Green into the Group’s existing portfolio of high-quality coal assets to lower its carbon footprint and ensure long- term sustainability as a diversified energy producer,” Seriti’s chief executive Mike Teke, said in the statement.
