Dear John,

Now more than ever, people around the world are looking for change. To rebuild a system that is more egalitarian, inclusive of all people and that works for the many rather than the few. A fairer system is being built from the ground up, with people securing victories in their local communities.

After decades of neo-liberal policies, public sectors around the world are impoverished. For many countries, these policies were forced upon them by the same powers that had formerly colonised them. In the name of growth, countries have seen their wealth extracted and people have been placed into poverty. People are dying because of political decisions.

We work on the frontlines, supporting people facing the dire consequences of global inequality. Alongside health workers and volunteers we go to hard-to-reach places and work with excluded people to stop health being denied.

While the fight is a global one, and the overall struggle is huge, people are securing victories in their community. In Guatemala, we stand with local midwives fighting the discrimination that stops indigenous Maya women giving birth in health centres and receiving the support and information they need to stay healthy.

We work with Traditional Birth Attendants and mothers to ensure state healthcare services are meeting their needs and their voices are heard. They are now being supported and listened to more than ever by state health providers.

We will continue to act in solidarity with those who are opposing health inequality. By challenging those who seek to deny people healthcare, the system is weakened. A win at the local level, is a win for the global movement.

Warm wishes,

Siaffa Bunduka
