JANUARY 2023
Dear John,
January has flown by but we hope your 2023 has started with much
positivity!
We've been getting back into the swing of things, reporting on December's
new Global Diversity deal and reacting to the news that China's population
has declined for the first time since 1961, and Population Matters featured
in some of the media coverage [3].
The 22 January would have marked the 50th anniversary since the landmark
Roe v. Wade abortion decision, we took the opportunity to review the lie
of the land six months after it was overturned. We also released a
brand-new video from an interview with an educator at Turimiquire, our
Empower to Plan partner doing such important work with rural communities
in Venezuela.
We've included a slightly unusual request in the _Take Action_ section
at the bottom of this email, please do get in touch if you are able to
help!
With very best wishes,
- The PM team
NEWS FROM POPULATION MATTERS
China's population falls for first time in six decades
On 17 January it was reported [4] that China's population dropped by
850,000 in 2022. We immediately released a statement taking issue with the
alarmist nature of the reporting, making it clear that this was something
to be celebrated and warning against the possible reaction of the Chinese
government to help stimulate population growth.

Can the new Global Biodiversity deal save one million species?
A new Global Diversity Framework was finally signed at the end of last
year. But, with minimal progress made in protecting nature since the last
agreement in 2011, it’s critical that the new framework sets the right
targets, and that governments are willing to take the action needed to
achieve them. Our Head of Campaigns, Alistair Currie, delves deeper.

Elon Musk: fact-checked!
Recently, Elon Musk replied to a post on Twitter claiming that our patron
Jane Goodall was seeking to reduce the world's population to the level it
was thousands of years ago. We were very pleased to see that fact-checkers
have exposed the claim as ridiculous - but frustrated that most of Musk's
millions of followers won't see it or won't care.

Could you go flight-free for one year?
We all know that there are relatively few things we can do in our lives
that will increase our carbon footprint as much as taking a long flight. In
this guest blog, Flight Free UK Director Anna Hughes lays out some
flight-related facts, how it compares to other lifestyle choices and the
pledge her organisation is asking people to take.

The world of population projections
The UN Population Projections are generally considered to be the premier
forecast for future population changes, with a pretty strong history of
getting it right and are the most widely cited. But there are others out
there, and some would argue that these alternatives are based on stronger
data and more robust modelling..

Conspiracy Chaos: coronavirus, Bill Gates, the UN and population
Over recent years, a growing proportion of Population Matters’ website
traffic has been driven by rather odd search terms including “Bill Gates
depopulation”, “Agenda 2030 population control”, and “depopulation
coronavirus vaccine”. In 2021, we wrote a blog to separate the myth
from the facts. We republished it in January, as theories linking the World
Economic Forum in Davos with a global depopulation conspiracy were being
circulated widely on social media.

WOMEN'S RIGHTS & SEXUAL HEALTH
Six months on from the overturning of Roe v. Wade
The 22 January would have marked the 50th anniversary of the landmark Roe
v. Wade decision, had it not been overturned in June last year. Digital and
Communications Manager, Ben Stallworthy, looks at the fallout and how
things look six months later.

TAKE ACTION
Would you be willing to be interviewed about your family-size choices?
We love to share the stories of people who have made the decision to have
smaller families or be childfree. We're often contacted by journalists
looking for people who want to tell their stories too. If you've made that
decision and might be interested in talking to the media, please get in
touch and we'll tell you more.

Quote of the month
_"We are conditioned to do things in a certain way, to consume more, to
purchase the latest thing. It sometimes takes a concerted effort to break
out of that, but sometimes all it needs is awareness."_
