Nevada Republicans introduce voter ID proposal, additional mail-in ballot
verification

8NewsNow.com | David Charns

February 2, 2023

Nevada Republicans have officially filed legislation to try again to
require identification when voting in person and provide additional steps
when voting by mail.

Republican Assem. Gregory Hafen II, of Pahrump, introduced the legislation
Monday. Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo said in his State of the State Address
last month that he would support such a measure.

"Signature verification is a time-intensive and cumbersome process," the
governor said in his Jan. 23 speech. "We require people to have a valid
form of identification to get on a plane, to operate a mother vehicle, or
to purchase alcohol or cigarettes, but not to cast a vote in an election.
That is illogical." [1]Read more

Milwaukee will host a Republican presidential primary debate, RNC chair
Ronna McDaniel confirms

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel | Corrinne Hess and Bill Glauber

February 2, 2023

Along with the 2024 Republican National Convention, Milwaukee will also
host a presidential primary debate, bringing even more national exposure to
the city.

After some speculation, newly re-elected Republican National Committee
chair Ronna McDaniel confirmed Thursday a debate will be a precursor to the
2024 convention.

"You should be able to expect that we'll have a debate here in Milwaukee,"
McDaniel said, during the host committee kick off event at 3rd Street
Market Hall. [2]Read more

In first GOP-led hearing about the border, witnesses paint sharply
different pictures

NPR| Joel Rose

February 1, 2023

Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee used their first hearing of
the new Congress to zero in on what they call a crisis at the southern U.S.
border.

The committee's chairman, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, presided over a hearing
Wednesday billed as "The Biden Border Crisis - Part I." As the name
implies, it's the first of what are likely to be many GOP-led hearings on
the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Jordan and other Republicans on the committee blamed the administration's
policies for the record number of migrant apprehensions at the border over
the past two years - even as President Biden has kept some of President
Trump's key border policies in place, including the pandemic restrictions
known as Title 42. [4]Read more

Eager to Challenge Trump, Republicans Aren't So Eager to Be the First

The New York Times| Maggie Haberman, Michael C. Bender and Reid J. Epstein

February 1, 2023

Nikki Haley is expected to join the 2024 race this month, but other G.O.P.
contenders are taking a wait-and-see approach. Some anti-Trump Republicans
worry that too much dithering could be costly.

Increased uncertainty is rippling through the Republican Party over how to
beat Donald J. Trump for the 2024 presidential nomination, as an array of
the party's top figures move slowly toward challenging the politically
wounded yet resilient former president. [5]Read more

Arizona Republicans fear they may blow it again

Sinema's party switch has opened the door. The fear is their candidate may
walk into the frame.

Politico| Holly Otterbein, Burgess Everett and Ally Mutnick

February 1, 2023

Krysten Sinema's defection from Democrats should be a golden opportunity
for the GOP. But two high-profile 2022 election losers in Arizona are
eyeing Senate runs in 2024, sparking angst among Republicans that they will
blow an increasingly winnable race.

Republican Blake Masters, who lost his Senate bid last year by 5 percentage
points, is setting himself up for another potential run, talking to
consultants and making calls about the contest. Some Arizona GOP
strategists are treating it as a foregone conclusion that he'll jump in,
although a person familiar with his moves said he is truly undecided at
this point and just testing the waters. [6]Read more

Bill Maher Trends on Twitter after getting slammed for being too 'right
wing': 'That smug face'

MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan said Maher was another example of a 'right-wing,
reactionary white [man]'

FOX News | Jeffrey Clark

January 31, 2023

The left on Twitter came out in force against comedian Bill Maher Tuesday,
arguing that he was a "right-wing" culture warrior who made racist comments
against minorities and had a "smug face," to boot.

"Bill Maher" trended Tuesday morning on the social media platform after CNN
announced that Maher's post-show segment, "Overtime," will air on Friday's
during "CNN Tonight."

But even before Maher's deal with CNN became public, the comedian was
already a punching bag for some on the left after he came out against
"woke" education and accused environmentalist celebrities of hypocrisy.

6.5 Million Fewer Democrats in 2022

WG Discussion Points | David Winston

January 27, 2023

As the dust settles from the 2022 election, many Republicans attribute the
disappointing outcome to Democratic tactics involving mail-in ballots.
White REpublicans should always look for ways to improve on campaign
mechanics, the election result was not because of turnout tactics. In fact,
as we pointed out in last week's Discussion Points, Democrats had the
lowest percentage of the electorate (33%) they have had over the last 20
elections, well under their previous low of 35% which came in significant
House Democratic Congressional defeats in 2010 and 2014. [8]WG Discussion
