The most extreme House Republicans are now threatening fiscal calamity by holding up the debt limit. They want disastrous cuts as a condition for allowing the government to pay its existing obligations. And Speaker Kevin McCarthy is too weak to stand up to them.

We don't have to accept this. If at least 5 House Republicans (out of 222) join all House Democrats, we can pass a clean bill to raise the debt limit responsibly—with no blackmail.

A discharge petition allows 218 lawmakers to bring a bill to the House floor without Speaker approval. It almost never succeeds, because you need some members of the ruling party to defy their leadership. But this time can be different.

Raising the debt limit does not authorize or allocate new federal spending. It simply allows the Treasury to borrow funds to cover spending already approved by Congress. The full faith and credit of the United States is not up for negotiation or debate.

Our message to Congress:
Kevin McCarthy cannot control the extremists in his Republican caucus, so it's way past time for the adults to take charge. Every House Democrat and at least five Republicans must pass a discharge petition to pass a clean debt limit bill—and avert economic calamity.
