Tomorrow, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) will vote on making South Carolina the first presidential primary in 2024.
But a group of local mayors, state legislators, DNC delegates, and other leaders just released a letter urging the DNC to make the first presidential primary state one that’s both diverse and competitive in the general election -- like Georgia, Nevada, Michigan, or North Carolina.
Whether 2024 or 2028, candidates will invest hundreds of millions of dollars in the first primary state -- talking with voters on the doors and in paid communication about Democratic values -- more so than any other primary state.
Given the high stakes in defeating Trumpism, can we afford to waste that investment on a state that isn’t competitive in the general election?
If you happen to know your local DNC member, please send this email to them.
DNC members who will be voting tomorrow morning have already seen this letter reported on in The Associated Press, Washington Post, Politico, and other media outlets. We will inform them and the media about thousands of public co-signers.
This is fundamentally about not shooting blanks in the battle to save our democracy.
The Congressional Black Caucus has endorsed Nevada to hold the first presidential primary -- due to its competitiveness in the general election and diversity with Black, Latino, and Asian American voters. It also has strong union laws.
Local South Carolina labor leaders have urged the DNC not to reward a state that has some of the worst union laws (including non-union hotels) in the nation. Politico reports that $11 million went to hotels alone in Iowa in just the final weeks before the Iowa caucus!
Whether it is Nevada, Georgia, Michigan, or North Carolina, the math is really simple. Democrats should be investing in a diverse, competitive swing state that can help us defeat Trumpism in the general election.
We will inform DNC members and the media about thousands of public co-signers.
