It has been 13 years since the US Supreme Court first endowed corporations with the same broad free speech rights that belong to individual citizens in the disastrous “Citizens United” decision.
Immediately, it invited corporations to dump billions of dollars and flood the free speech playing field. Corporations could open their massive treasure chests of spending to influence elections -- and that’s exactly what happened.
Granting corporations the free speech rights of individuals has drowned out the free speech of individuals in a raging torrent of corporate “speech.” Last year, corporations spent $16.7 billion on the midterm elections! It wasn’t even a Presidential election year!

The ultra-wealthy picked up their gigantic megaphones and hastened their project of turning our democracy into an oligarchy run by a few rich families.
Super PACs and corporations hid huge amounts of campaign financing, while foreign powers made use of the massive loopholes to expand their influence on our elections.
With our democracy itself at risk, attacked from so many sides, it is time to overturn Citizens United and create a democracy where all the people’s voices can be heard, not just corporations and the ultra-rich.
To overcome a Supreme Court decision, a Constitutional Amendment is required. And this is exactly what Democrats in the House have proposed.
