You hear very little about Eritrea in the United States. I doubt most high
school students could find it on a map.
But there is a lesson they could learn from hearing about it.
I grew up in Eritrea, a country that was once a beacon of African democracy
but is now one of the world's most oppressive and authoritarian countries.
I had to flee my country, but that hasn’t stopped me from sharing my story.
That’s why I want to share my story through the Dissident Project. But I

Young Voice’s Dissident Project brings survivors of tyrannical socialist
countries to high schools around the United States to tell their stories.
We are countering the mainstream narratives about how peaceful and successful
socialism can be. Too many young people are taught to believe the United States
is an evil, oppressive country and that capitalism is a failure.
But I witnessed firsthand how a government can gradually take control of
every aspect of citizens' lives.
To fight back, I had to get involved in underground pro-democracy activism and
citizen journalism in Eritrea, where the private press is prohibited.
I used my journalism and new media training from the Aileen Getty School of
Citizen Journalism to write news articles, journals, opinion pieces, and
analyses on freedom-related issues.
But my activism wasn’t ignored by the authoritarians in charge.
They only suspected me of engaging in those activities, but I was literally
kidnapped.
I was detained, tortured, and forced to leave the country.
But that hasn't stopped me. I'm tired of being silent.
That’s why I want, no need, to share my story, Friend.
