In case you missed it, yesterday Governor DeSantis announced he would sign a six-week abortion ban if the Republican legislature put it on his desk.
Even though Florida’s 15-week ban is currently held up in court, GOP lawmakers are ready to push for an all-out ban when they come back in session next month. The Florida Phoenix called the heartbeat bill “the most likely legislation that could be pushed by [the] GOP in 2023.” [[link removed]]
What they are doing is reprehensible. And with Republicans in the supermajority, we don’t have the votes to stop this, or any attack on our reproductive freedom. That’s why our mission is so urgent. We need to start now, recruiting and training Democratic pro-choice women to run for state office in 2024 — because we know the only way to defeat these harmful policies is to have representatives who will vote against them. I t’s clear DeSantis cares more about playing politics with our reproductive lives than he does about making Florida a state where everyone has an opportunity to receive a quality education, buy a home, and afford health care. Unfortunately, his friends in the legislature are going to deliver on whatever he wants.
