It's Groundhog Day, John — and I was a little worried we weren’t going to hear from the famed Punxsutawney Phil at all.
Look around at the Republican Party, and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
On issues after issue — equality, racial justice, climate, reproductive rights, preserving our democracy, and economic well being (to name just a few) — Republicans are weaponizing ignorance and obliviousness.
That’s right, John: Republicans have their heads in the sand. In fact, so many Republicans have buried their heads in the sand that I was afraid our poor groundhog wasn’t going to find his way out of the ground at all.
Luckily for us, Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his underground dwelling this morning and saw his shadow — which, of course, means “we’re in for another six weeks of winter.”
To be fair, anyone could have looked up a weather forecast, seen the drastic deep freezes happening around the country, and correctly guessed that winter wasn’t over. That’s how science works.
But for those who would rather believe a woodland critter over our nation’s fleet of weather satellites, remote sensing technology, predictive models, and skilled meteorologists… OK. The groundhog saw his shadow.
Though we can’t be sure that it wasn’t the shadow of a nearby Republican burying their head in ignorance.
