Managing Chronic Health Conditions

Course: Identifying Children with ME/CFS and Long-COVID

The new NASN Learning Center course, ME/CFS and Long-COVID: The School Nurse Role in Identifying Children with Chronic Illness, explores the role of the school nurse in identifying children with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Long COVID (Post-COVID Conditions [PCC]). School nurses play a critical role in identifying the symptoms, referral for further medical evaluation, and the health and academic impacts experienced by students. Caring for Students with Type 1 Diabetes

Children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) experience multiple challenges in school. School nurses provide leadership in the school setting to support resilience and self-management for these students. NASN’s School Nursing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline: Students with Type 1 Diabetes provides evidence-based recommendations to assist school nurses in improving the health and safety of the school-age child with T1D. School Nursing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline: Students with Type 1 Diabetes Toolkit helps school nurses implement those recommendations and includes multiple tools and resources.

School nurses are on the front lines of student health and are critical to a school’s readiness to respond to a cardiac emergency. Parent Heart Watch invites you to earn a free AED for your school when you implement a cardiac emergency response plan. Get Charged Up! is a program that promotes cardiac preparedness through the proper installation of AEDs with a well-written, practiced, and communicated plan. Apply by February 27, 2023, to participate.

CDC Helps Schools Prepare for Emergencies

K-12 schools are responsible for protecting students and staff members from a variety of threats. CDC provides information to help schools prepare for emergencies, outlines the complex roles of different agencies in school preparedness, and provides a list of existing resources. Learn more.


Managing Infectious Diseases in Schools Learning Opportunity

The American Academy of Pediatrics is hosting two Managing Infectious Diseases in Schools Learning Communities to advance infection control and prevention measures in schools for school nurses, school-based health center staff, and school-based health professionals. Seizures: A Case Review with Implications for School Nurses

A knowledge gap identifying a need for information has developed surrounding various types of seizures with implications for school nurses and the care they provide to students. Gaps depend on a foundation of knowledge for them to exist. Here are a few case studies to help strengthen the foundation of knowledge as a review from the Clinical Pediatrics journal.

National Children's Dental Health Month (NCDHM)

Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors NCDHM to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits early and scheduling regular dental visits helps children to get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. The ADA offers free online resources to help you promote the benefits of good oral health to children.
