On January 13, 2023, Minnesota law was updated to recognize the Internal Revenue Code as amended through December 15, 2022. You can find updated forms, schedules, and instructions for tax years 2017 through 2022 on the Minnesota Department of Revenue website.

The January 2023 tax bill also decoupled (separated) certain provisions from the Internal Revenue Code. Certain items may still be included on Minnesota tax returns on various forms and schedules. For a complete list of decoupled provisions by tax law (Minnesota modifications), see Conformity by Federal Act [ [link removed] ].

*How does this affect my clients?*

If your clients had any conformity-related items on prior-year tax returns, they should consider amending their returns. Unlike previous years, the Minnesota Department of Revenue will not automatically adjust their returns for tax law changes. To see if your client should amend, see our Conformity by Form and Line [ [link removed] ] and Conformity by Federal Act [ [link removed] ] tables.

The statute of limitations to claim a refund has been extended to December 31, 2023, for the years that have expired statute of limitations.?This extension is only for amended returns filed because of a law change in this tax bill.

For more information on tax conformity, see our 2023 Federal Conformity for Income Tax webpage. [ [link removed] ]
