Shell’s jawdropping profits are all over the news – and they’re giving record sums to shareholders while millions struggle with unprecedented energy bills.

It’s a perfect symbol of Rishi Sunak’s first 100 days in office – the rich getting richer, the cost of living rising for everyone else, and the climate crisis barely even on the radar.

Fossil fuel companies like Shell are making a killing from burning fossil fuels while our future goes up in smoke. As Global Justice Now research showed last year, big oil companies are responsible for more historic emissions than most countries – and yet they’re contributing nothing to the spiralling costs of dealing with climate change around the world. Their ‘fair share’ of these costs would amount to many billions every year.

Last year Rishi Sunak was forced to introduce a one-off windfall tax on energy company profits as the cost of energy bills spiralled. But the windfall tax was too little, too late – and it came with ludicrous loopholes that actually encourage new drilling for oil and gas.

What’s more, a one-off windfall tax is not enough. The fossil fuel industry has been laughing all the way to the bank for decades while people around the world face the devastating consequences of their operations. Loss and damage in the global south is estimated to cost between $290 billion and $580 billion per year by 2030. We need a permanent polluters tax to make these companies pay for the damage they’ve caused.

In November our movement helped win a massive step forward at the UN climate talks, when governments finally committed to a loss and damage fund to help the global south pay for the costs of our changing climate. Justice demands that mega-polluters like Shell should pay the lion’s share of loss and damage costs – but so far they’ve contributed nothing.
