From Fun Facts handouts to Kahoot! games, Statistics in Schools (SIS) has created resources to share relevant data with students during the month of February. Check out our newly updated resources for Black (or African American) History Month, Valentine?s Day, Public Schools Week, and more!

Observing Black (or African American) History Month

Learn cool facts about the African American population with SIS resources that give students the opportunity to have fun while learning about Census Bureau data. Students can discover trends in the educational attainment of the U.S. Black population; the projected population of African Americans in 2060; U.S. places with the highest percentage of Black residents, and more.

Did you know the median age of Blacks or African Americans was 35 in 2021 or that Shirley A. Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress in 1968 and helped collect responses in Brooklyn for the 1970 Census? Commemorate Black History month with our Fun Facts? handout full of statistics about African Americans from education levels, occupations, birthplace populations of famous African Americans and more. The accompanying teaching guide provides activities you can do with your students using our fun facts to expand their knowledge about this population.

Educational Attainment of Black and Total U.S. Population by Age Warm-up Activity

True or false? Approximately 94 percent of the U.S. Black population aged 25-39 had a high school diploma or higher in 2020. Students can find the answer to this with our warm-up activity as they analyze data on the educational attainment of the Black population and compare it to the national average.

There?s data about candy, jewelry stores, marriage, and more you can share with them and use the accompanying teaching guide as a helpful tool to creatively teach different grade levels.

Happy Public Schools Week: February 27?March 3

Did you know that each additional year of education people attain, their median annual income could possible rise by about $6,000? As we recognize Public Schools Week, share our Fitting a Line to Data - Earnings and Educational Attainment activity with your middle school students. This activity examines the relationship between earnings and levels of educational attainment. Students create a scatter plot relating median annual income to years of education and draw inferences on its impact.
