I’m amazed by the support of our community – in just one week, over 500 people across Canada sent an email to key decision-makers asking them to extend capacity-building funding for feminist organizations in the upcoming federal budget.
However, the clock is ticking. Funding for 250 feminist organizations including LEAF runs out on March 31, 2023 – and we need to secure a commitment from the federal government to continue investing in the sector by renewing capacity-building funding in Budget 2023.
I’ve been having conversations with leaders of feminist organizations across the country, and while we remain hopeful and optimistic about the support we’ve received for this campaign, many of us are anxiously awaiting word on whether this funding will be renewed.
For many of our organizations, not receiving renewed capacity-building funding will mean cuts to critical programming or staff layoffs. In worst-case scenarios, some organizations will be forced to shut their doors entirely.
