Dear John,
We are facing a global crisis of displacement. The war in Ukraine has led to the fastest-growing refugee emergency since World War II. The number of displaced people now exceeds 100 million. Asylum seekers have been turned away from border after border and hundreds of millions of people face a terrible choice between flight and famine.
Please join us this weekend for HIAS’s Refugee Shabbat, cosponsored by ADL, alongside individuals, congregations and organizations across the country to learn more about the global crisis and how you can help.
Speak out against the anti-immigrant hate that can stoke physical violence and lead to harmful policies. Dehumanizing language has motivated nativist laws to exclude refugees and immigrants. As one example that had devastating consequences, we remember the antisemitic intentions of the laws and restrictions that drastically limited the number of Jews able to find refuge in the U.S., blocking an escape just as Nazism swept across Europe.
Today we are united, fighting not to have history repeat itself when refugees and asylum seekers need our help.
HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?
Please join us in dedicating time this weekend to learn about the plight of refugees and asylum seekers, and to speak out on their behalf. Find resources and learn how you or your congregation can take action on the Refugee Shabbat website. Resources and events to consider are:
At a time when the most marginalized among us are at their most vulnerable, thank you for joining ADL and HIAS to show your support during Refugee Shabbat.
