Dear John,
Imposing an outright ban on millions of Americans’ ability to use TikTok poses a dangerous trade. During massive protests in Iran, people capitalized on TikTok’s algorithm to evade government censorship and promote content supporting the demonstrations to users everywhere.
A nationwide ban would eliminate space for free expression, information sharing, connection to communities abroad, and political and social organizing. The United States—and democratic governments everywhere—have an opportunity to show that there are better ways to protect people, and that censorship is not an effective response to the genuine risks of the digital age.

Political Prisoner Spotlight
|
On December 8, 2016, while filming a protest, Tsi Conrad found himself surrounded by at least 10 military officers. Arrested at gunpoint, interrogated relentlessly, tortured brutally, sentenced excessively—and yet, his voice is heard loud and clear beyond the prison walls at Kondengui Central Prison in Cameroon.
