I wanted to send you a personal note as I reflect on the beginning of Black History Month.
Today, I'm thinking about our ancestors and elders – and the countless contributions they've made to our nation throughout its history.
I'm thinking about the sacrifices of all the great African American heroes who have come before me, who dedicated and often sacrificed their lives to the fight for civil rights, equity and social and economic justice. Leaders and trailblazers like my mother Mildred Parish Massey, Maya Angelou and my mentor, Shirley Chisholm, have shaped who I am today.
I'm thinking about all the love and joy that comes from the Black community – and especially my community in Oakland, which I've had the honor of representing for nearly 25 years. And I'm thinking of the work that still lies ahead of us to uplift our people and create a more fair and just system that truly represents the diversity of our country.
As I reflect on how I can best continue the critical work of those before me, I'm also thinking about the fact that there are currently no Black women serving in the U.S. Senate – and how I'm hoping to change that.
You'll be hearing more about my run for Senate in the coming weeks, but here's the simple truth: I can't continue the fight for racial and social equity without the resources to win this race. That's why I'm personally asking: Will you chip in $5, or even $25, right now to join Team Lee and build a progressive future for all?
There's no question that we have a long way to go to achieve true justice and equality, but I'm so grateful to know that you're standing with me in this fight.
In solidarity,
Barbara Lee
