John,

I wanted to send over a quick note to make sure you knew that today marks the start of National Gun Violence Survivors Week, observed between February 1-7.

Everytown for Gun Safety – an organization that advocates for gun safety reform around the country has organized an online platform where survivors can share the stories [[link removed]] of the loved ones they’ve lost to gun violence, and connect with other survivors via a “ survivors network [[link removed]] .”

As you know, I have my own experience as a survivor of gun violence when my son Jordan was shot to death for playing “loud music”. Just when I thought my world ended, my fight as a gun safety activist began. I eventually ran for office and became a Member of Congress in 2018.

Since I arrived in Washington, I have stood up to the gun lobby, for my son and the tens of thousands of Americans extinguished by their enterprise. Our collective stories are crucial in this fight to put the faces of this movement – the memories of our loved ones – onto the reforms that would’ve saved their lives and for the communities that we can still save.

On behalf of all survivors, I am grateful for the work that Everytown and our partner organizations have done to promote the sharing of survivor stories like mine.

We can never allow gun violence in America to be normalized, but we absolutely must normalize the sharing of stories to help everyone else recognize the lasting impact gun violence leaves on our communities.

I’ve also experienced peace by sharing my own story. Yes, it is painful – even to this day – to talk about Jordan, but the alternative of letting his memory and spirit fade is even worse. So, if you’re a survivor of gun violence, I would encourage you to participate in Everytown’s program during National Gun Violence Survivors Week and share your own story [[link removed]] .

During this week (and every week afterward), I will keep fighting for gun safety reform in Congress in memory of my son Jordan and the thousands of other victims who were taken from us too soon, and on behalf of survivors like me – who are left to process the trauma, loss, and grief that comes with losing someone close to gun violence.

With love,

– Lucy
