John, in the beginning phases of the House GOP takeover, they've begun a focus on what we all expected...hollow talking points and political theater.
They began the hearing today on border security by arguing over the number of times the pledge of allegiance should be carried out in the House. And while Rep. Nadler argued that on the House floor, they do in fact pledge allegiance, Matt Gaetz, Mike Johnson, and Van Drew took the opportunity to argue that Democrats don't love the country because they don't want to repeat the pledge repetitively. Yes, you read that right, Matt Gaetz is on the House Judiciary Committee.
The most substantial argument to come out of this show was from David Cicilline (D-RI), who argued that those who supported the January 6th Insurrection shouldn't be leading the pledge. But of course, the GOP majority continued to bombard the conversation with false equivalencies, and empty statements on what America means, and what Americans want from their lawmakers.
The idea of what America means to GOP lawmakers fluctuates depending on the majority of each party. Under Trump, that meant tax cuts for the rich, alleged crimes committed at high levels, and supporting an attempted coup. But now, with the MAGA influence in the House, the Constitution is once again their favorite thing to pretend to respect. That as well as the troops and the meaning of the flag, which only carries meaning if they aren't busy voting down legislation that would support the troops.
The GOP control of the House started out as a mess, and it has continued to be one. Can you support our efforts to prepare for special elections, and those in 2024, and take BACK the House from the MAGA cult?
John, if we thought electing McCarthy was going to be the messiest thing to come out of the 118th Congress, then we would be wrong. Thank you for standing by us in the mission and helping us fight for better representation.
