Hi John,
Next Tuesday, Feb. 7, the losing Republican candidate for a seat on the Mendham Township Committee, Tom Baio, will be in court trying to throw out the votes of Democrats. This attack is being led by the Morris County Republican Committee Chair Laura Ali, and her leadership team, which includes Mendham Township Deputy Mayor Sarah Neibart.
They have no shame! According to court filings, they are targeting 33 voters, including at least three who did not even vote in the local election! They are attacking voters who have lived in Mendham Township since childhood and never left. They are going after students; Latino/a and Black voters; voters who consider themselves part of the LGBTQ+ community; a young voter with an intellectual developmental disability; and a 98-year-old, longtime resident of the community.
They even tried to stop the Democratic winner, Lauren Spirig, from being sworn in, but that motion was denied by the court!
This is a despicable attempt at disenfranchising voters and trying to overturn election results, similar to what we have seen at the national level and in states across the country.
Baio never brought up concerns about voters prior to the election. His “crusade” for “voter integrity” only arose after he lost. And, not one Republican member of the Mendham Township Committee has spoken out against it, despite repeated calls from residents!
Thank you to everyone who came to the Dec. 20th Mendham Township Committee meeting to call out Baio and ask him to concede the race and drop it. View the meeting online.
We are grateful to the ACLU-NJ for coming to our aid and filing a friend of the court brief against Baio.
Now, we need your help to defend this outrageous action by Republicans in Morris County! Please support voting rights for Democrats in Mendham Township, Morris County and all over New Jersey by donating today to help fund the legal defense of Committeewoman Lauren Spirig. DONATE
