Friend, I’m writing from the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court, where U.S. Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico, along with Minority Leader Charles Schumer and a half dozen other senators, just announced the reintroduction of the Democracy for All constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. We’re now entering a new, exciting phase of work to get unlimited corporate money out of our politics, and I need your help. Can you pitch in right now to fuel our work to save our democracy? Donate now or even become a monthly donor. When we started campaigning for a constitutional amendment — the day that the Supreme Court issued its abominable Citizens United decision — even a lot of my friends said the idea was nuts. No more. With 800 cities and towns, and 20 states supporting an amendment, we’ve won the debate over the idea of overturning Citizens United with overwhelming popular support. Now it’s time to win, period. Here’s a thumbnail sketch of the work ahead: - With pressure during the August congressional recess and nationwide actions on Constitution Day (September 17), we supercharge our grassroots movement for an amendment.
- We issue cutting-edge reports and exposés to build a media drumbeat on how Big Money is corrupting our democracy.
- We pound Mitch McConnell to permit a floor vote in the Senate on a constitutional amendment.
- We ratchet up the pressure in the U.S. House of Representatives, surpass 200 co-sponsors (we now have more than 130 and that number is fast climbing) and win majority support in a floor vote.
These steps will march us much closer to ultimate passage of an amendment. We really don’t have a choice about this. Vast majorities of the American people want the government to lower drug prices, raise the minimum wage, protect the planet, hold corporate criminals to account, deliver health care to all and more, but action is stalled because those demands conflict with the interests of a corporate class superpowered by the Citizens United decision. To make our democracy work and ensure our government responds to the will of the people, rather than the megadonors, we must overturn Citizens United. We’re as frugal as they come, but doing this work requires resources. Can you chip in right now to support our campaign to overturn Citizens United and make our democracy work? Together, we are going to make this happen. Thanks for all you do, Robert Weissman President, Public Citizen P.S. Please consider becoming a monthly donor.
