Private Equity Impacts Workforce
In the January issue of Health Affairs, Joseph Dov Bruch and coauthors estimate clinician composition changes in private equity (PE)-acquired practice sites across several medical specialties.

The authors examine clinician replacement ratio across PE-acquires and non-PE-acquired practices, as well as practice-level changes in yearly clinician counts before acquisition.

The findings indicate that there are higher clinician replacement ratios at PE-acquired practice sites compared with non-PE-acquired sites across specialties and clinician types.

This outcome may reflect private equity’s selection of acquisition targets to facilitate practice growth, which in turn requires more clinicians, explain Bruch and coauthors.

While the authors conclude that the longer-term implications for workforce size and composition at private equity–acquired practice sites are unclear, they do note that there may be substantial generational differences in how private equity is viewed by clinicians.
