Hey John,
On December 1st, 2022 I was sworn in as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 49th district.
But before I was officially an elected member of the state legislature, I had to envision myself in office. Thankfully I had a community and mentors in my corner helping me turn that vision into a reality.
If you're a Black young progressive, Run for Something is in your corner too. That's why we're hosting tonight's
See Yourself Running for Black candidates considering making that bold first step.
Don't miss See Yourself Running: Black candidate edition TONIGHT at 8:00 p.m. ET. The time is now to elect Black young progressives, like you!
No matter what your level of experience or where you're at in the decision to run, See Yourself Running is designed to demystify the campaign process and give you the tools you need to see yourself in elected office.
We will be joined by some all-star Black Run for Something alums who were once in your shoes:
- Run for Something WI State Director Darrol Gibson and National Organizing Director for The Collective PAC Kevin Olasanoye will be our moderators
- Durham School Board member (NC) Millicent Rogers
- Westminster City Councilmember (CO) Obi Ezeadi
- And myself, PA state Representative Izzy Smith-Wade-El
I know the past few days have been hard for all of us as we navigate the sadness and righteous rage we all feel about the murder of Tyre Nichols.
Running for office is just one of the ways we can rebuild the broken systems that refuse to see our humanity. By positioning ourselves in places of decision-making, we can prioritize our communities and create policies that help instead of harm.
The thing is: you don’t have to do any of this alone. Tonight, we'll share advice, talk about issues that Black candidates face on the campaign trail, and answer any questions you have about running.
More young Black progressives in office means more policies that reflect our values. It means more young Black kids envisioning themselves as leaders. It means a more equitable country and democracy.
And it starts with you, right now, making the decision to run and make it happen. Save your spot at See Yourself Running TONIGHT at 8 p.m. ET!
See you tonight — and in the future, running!
Izzy Smith-Wade-El
