John, February is OUR month. And it's about damn time February started!
This month and beyond, we remember the importance and work of our ancestors and those before us – but at the same time, we work together to move forward. To move in a bold, progressive direction in order to take our futures into our own hands.
It's why for the entire month of February, we are excited to be a part of Black Futures Month celebrations and recognitions! Black movement leaders coined Black Futures Month as a visionary, forward-looking spin on celebrations of Blackness in February because it is important to manifest and dream of a world where all Black lives matter.
This Black Futures Month, we are dedicated to highlighting aspects of community care.
One huge way in which we care for our communities centers around food: preparing food, serving one another, and eating together.
Our communities are keeping traditions alive and bringing nutritious and culturally diverse foods into the spotlight and closer to communities that have been restricted access to such things in the past. Food is a reflection of where folks exist – voluntarily or involuntarily. In many ways, the
care in our communities have always had foundations built upon the intersection of
food and culture.
Black folks have always been the creators and generators – but with nontraditional approaches to food, we are defining new arenas where ownership is possible and brings sustenance and support to our communities.
We've got an entire month ahead of us – so be sure you're following us on social media and don't miss any Black Futures Month content! >>
