Friend,

Over centuries, the contributions of Black people have shaped our state, our country, and the Democratic Party into what it is today. Black History is American history, and we’re celebrating that history every day. Together, we remember those who came before us, honor their resilience, and uplift the ways we continue to make history today and pave the way for a better tomorrow.

Serving as the first Black Executive Director of the Texas Democratic Party allows me to hold my own piece of Black history and, while this is one of the honors of my professional career, it reminds me how telling it is that -- even in 2023 -- there still must be so many “firsts” for Black people in leadership.

Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black & South Asian woman to hold the Vice Presidency. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to sit on the Supreme Court Bench. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the first Black person to lead a Party caucus in the House of Representatives.

These firsts, along with countless others, serve as milestones on the road to Black liberation. And Friend, Texas Democrats are working year-round to ensure that these “firsts” become the norm to ensure that Black Texans have a seat at every table.

Every day, we are building a Democratic Party that looks like the people we represent. Strengthening our organizing infrastructure, protecting the right to vote, and electing a diverse slate of candidates in municipal elections is just one crucial way that we can build a Texas that is truly representative of its people.

Pivotal moments in Black American history show that mountains can be moved when we move them together. I’m proud to be in this work with so many leaders across our state as we keep pushing forward toward a Texas government that delivers real results for the people of Texas.

In service and hope,

Jamarr Brown
Executive Director, Texas Democratic Party
