CHW partners with Texas Chiropractic College to offer physical medicine services
Post Date: 02/01/2023 11:03 AM
Coastal Health & Wellness (CHW) patients may now take advantage of physical medicine, rehabilitation and chiropractic care, thanks to a recent partnership with Texas Chiropractic College (TCC).
New services include physical medicine and rehabilitation, chronic pain management, TMD (TMJ), stroke rehabilitation and other physical ailments for patients referred by their CHW provider.
?We reached out to Texas Chiropractic College after noticing a trend with specialty care referrals, especially physical medicine and chronic pain management,? said CHW Chief Operating Officer Ami Cotharn.
?Our patients clearly needed access to these services, but many weren?t following through with their doctor?s referral for specialty care,? Cotharn added. ?We decided to eliminate any barriers ? transportation, affordability, understanding the process ? and bring those services in-house to meet our patients? needs.?
Chiropractics is progressively integrating into mainstream medicine supported by the passing of the Affordable Care Act, which created a new healthcare system that focuses on integrated, holistic, patient-centered and evidence-based primary care, Cotharn said.
The partnership is a win-win. CHW patients now have access to specialty care at their medical home while TCC chiropractic student interns get hands-on experience that is vital to their education and training. Interns work under the supervision and alongside TCC Doctor of Chiropractic licensed faculty.
TCC has helped develop innovative chiropractic methods, conducted groundbreaking research and broadened the scientific frontiers of chiropractic medicine. Students are taught the science behind spinal care by offering comprehensive academic options with a hands-on approach. In addition, TCC aims to work within an Interprofessional Education (IPE) approach. IPE focuses on multidisciplinary teamwork and team-based care approach to care for the patient, considering all aspects, medical, physical and mental health.
?Texas Chiropractic College is a teaching environment so we are always looking for opportunities that allow our students to gain hands-on experience where they can put what they have learned in the classroom to actual practice. Partnering with CHW is a wonderful opportunity for them,? said Dr. Kent Gray, DC, TCC clinic chief of staff.
TCC joined CHW late last year and already is serving roughly 100 patients. Many of the patients they?ve seen have never been to chiropractor.
??It?s been great to be get out in the community, bridge that gap for patients and gain hands-on experience. We spend three or four days in class each week so being able to work with patients and put that learning to practice has been beneficial,? said Chrissa Thomas-Salcido, TCC chiropractic student intern. ?It allows us to be in a clinic setting, adapt and transform into better students, which will make us better chiropractors.?
Services are available to all established CHW patients, following a referral from their provider. TCC practices at CHW?s Texas City clinic. Patients at CHW?s Galveston clinic may schedule appointments at the Texas City location. If needed, transportation from Galveston is available via Coastal Connect. This is a cash pay program and patients may receive services based on a sliding fee scale if they qualify.
