We entered 2023 with historically high levels of inflation, the threat of a global food crisis and rising deforestation. Biden’s Justice40 Initiative: Tracking Progress 

Underserved communities bear the brunt of the impacts of climate change due to decades of systemic racism and discriminatory policies that put them on the frontlines. Two years ago, when U.S. President Joe Biden took office, he made a historic promise to direct 40% of the benefits of federal climate investments to disadvantaged communities. Two years into Biden’s “Justice40 Initiative,” WRI experts check in on progress and pinpoint where more work is needed. Read more.

A ‘Just Transition’ Away from Oil and Gas 

More than half of the world’s oil and gas comes from middle-income developing countries in Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Latin America. As oil and gas demand drops in favor of cleaner power sources, these countries will need to ensure a “just transition” for workers in the fossil fuel industry. New research from WRI offers recommendations on how oil- and gas-dependent economies can shift to lower-carbon economies without leaving anyone behind. Read more.

Renowned Scientist Dr. Pamela Matson to Join WRI’s Board of Directors 

WRI is pleased to welcome Dr. Pamela Matson to its Board of Directors. Matson is a professor of environmental studies and Dean Emerita at Stanford University and was a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report that received a Nobel Prize. “I am honored and excited to join WRI’s Board to help further its mission of addressing the world’s most urgent challenges and find solutions that lift up people and nature together.” Learn more about WRI’s newest board member.
