Top acts announced for Splendour 2023

splendour

It’s great to hear that Madness and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will headline Splendour Festival at Wollaton Park on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 July. They are two of the biggest acts to ever headline what is one of the main events in Nottingham’s cultural calendar, which celebrates its 15th year this year. Joining them will be The Kooks, Rudimental, Sugababes, Confidence Man, Altered Images and last year’s hugely popular Eurovision contender for the UK Sam Ryder, with further acts to be added across all five stages for the epic weekender.

In response to the cost-of-living crisis, new for this year is the introduction of a payment plan ticket option, offering ticket buyers a flexible option to split the cost of their ticket into more manageable monthly instalments between now and the event in July. Tickets for Splendour go on sale at 10am on Friday 3 February, with an exclusive early bird price for weekend tickets priced at £92 for adults. City residents weekend tickets are priced at £82.80. Accompanied children aged 10 and under go free. Day tickets and VIP tickets are also available.

School strikes

school strikes

A number of schools have been affected by strike action today.

My husband is out on strike today actually as a member of the teachers’ union, NEU. I know from my own family how hard teachers work and I also know as a parent that schools are struggling to recruit and retain which only adds to this workload and means that kids lose consistency – one in four newly qualified teachers leaves the profession within three years.

We understand that some parents and carers will have needed to make different arrangements today and it’s right to acknowledge that disruption to daily household routines. But it’s also equally important that all workers – teachers included – are able to take action to raise their collective voices for change.

Nottingham wraps up ambitious UK-first wireless electric charging trial

wireless

Our UK-first wireless electric taxi charging trial is wrapping up this week, with the wireless charging infrastructure now being removed from Trent Street. The space used for the trial will return to a normal taxi rank in the coming days once the works are completed.

Since the trial began four months ago, almost 1,000 wireless charging events have taken place by over 20 taxi drivers testing the new wireless charging technology. Feedback from taxi drivers has been positive, and lots of information and comments will be shared with the Government’s Office for Zero Emission Vehicles and used to help develop future wireless electric charging for vehicles like taxis, ambulances and more.

National Heart Month

national heart month

Today marks the start of National Heart Month. Heart and circulatory diseases kill one in four people in the UK but there are a lot of small changes you can make to help lower your risk, like eating more healthy food, managing your weight and stress, cutting down on alcohol and quitting smoking.

Being physically active is also really important in helping to protect your heart. You’re much more likely to get heart and circulatory diseases if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or Type Two Diabetes, and physical activity can help manage these conditions.

Even just taking a brisk daily walk, which makes you breathe harder, feel warmer and makes your heart beat faster can help.

You could try:

* Walking
* Gardening
* Taking the stairs instead of the lift
* Cycling
* Swimming

* Housework, like vacuuming.

Marking the start of LGBT+ history month

lgbt+

LGBT+ History Month takes place every February, marking the abolition of Section 28 - which prohibited the “promotion” of homosexuality – in 2003. Two decades seems both shockingly recent and a long time ago in terms of how far we’ve come as a society and I’m proud to live in a city that is largely friendly, welcoming and supportive of everyone.

Did you know? Notts LGBT+ network host regular events in the city and county for LGBT+ people to get together [ [link removed] ]

Nottingham Council House will proudly fly the rainbow LGBT+ flag to mark the month.
