After taking to the stage yesterday at AFL-CIO’s mayoral forum, I wanted to take a minute to explain why supporting unions is central to my campaign and my vision for the City of Philadelphia.
As the son of a public school teacher who was in a union for 30+ years, I know the power and importance of a strong, union labor force in delivering solutions that transform people's lives. In the 80’s, my mother went on strike with her fellow teachers to fight for better benefits — and won. Her ability to fight for what she deserved — with the power of a union behind her — provided for our family and gave me the opportunity for a better future.
I wouldn’t have had the opportunities I had without unions.
