Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently announced his plan to block a new African American studies AP course for high school students, stating that the course is “inexplicably contrary to Florida law and significantly lacks educational value.”
Let’s get one thing straight, friends — making it illegal to teach our nation’s history is extremely dangerous. African American history is American history.
The experiences of African Americans in the United States aren’t “theoretical”, as DeSantis has implied. Slavery happened. Jim Crow happened. Mass incarceration is happening. There is no ignoring the long-lasting ramifications of the very real, very damaging history of systemic racism that Republicans want to completely sweep under the rug.
