Dear John,
For years, CREDO has centered Black Lives and Black History as a core part of our mission. We've donated more than $15 million to groups fighting for civil rights, and specifically to groups like the Zinn Education Project and Facing History and Ourselves who advocate for teaching our true history and challenging students and teachers to stand up to racism and bigotry.
So, on this Black History Month, we are disappointed and appalled to see conservative lawmakers in Florida, Missouri, Oklahoma and other states across the country wildly escalate the attacks on teaching African American history in schools and whipping up racist hysteria about "critical race theory."
No one should ever have to fear that they are breaking the law for teaching and learning African American history and the impact of that history on the institutions that currently govern this country. That's why we believe Congress must renew efforts to pass legislation to protect teachers and students from these dangerous bans on teaching Black history in schools.

In 2021, Rep. Jamaal Bowman introduced the African American History Act, which would invest $10 million over 5 years in the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) with the goal of supporting African American history education programs that are voluntarily available for students, parents, and educators.
While the fight to ban African American history is happening at the state level, the federal government has an obligation and the resources to help fend off these attacks by passing this legislation. It would be a small, but critically important step in the right direction.
Trying to ban the teaching about racism is an act of institutional racism. If you never learn about racism, you cannot combat it — and that's why we need your help to push back on these attacks.
