Hi John,
When I took on the job of Prime Minister, I said bread and butter issues like the cost of living would be my top priority. That’s why today, in my first policy announcement as Prime Minister, I set out extra support for families and businesses.
I’ll give a quick overview of today’s announcement below, but I wanted to start by acknowledging everyone impacted by this week’s severe weather. It’s been an incredibly difficult time, but it’s been heartwarming to see communities and volunteers rallying around to help others. If you or your family need support, you can find out what’s available near you here <[link removed]>.
This week’s weather has created a lot of extra stress and financial pressure, in what is already a tough time. Households across New Zealand are thinking hard about their budgets, and here in Government, we’re focused on what we can do to help.
Today, I announced we’re extending the fuel tax cut, discounted road user charges and half price public transport until 30 June 2023.
Transport is the third biggest expense for households after housing and food. This extension will help to ease the pressure, cutting the cost of filling up a 60 litre tank of petrol by around $17.25 and helping to reduce fuel costs that are driving up food prices.
This is a practical way we can help with the challenges families and businesses are facing right now. Of course, it is just a start, a first step in dealing with some of the persistent cost pressures facing New Zealanders. While this policy alone won’t solve the cost of living crisis, it will make a difference - and right now, I know every bit helps.
As I’ve signalled, the cost of living will be a focus for us in this year’s Budget, and I’ll be back in touch soon with more on everything we’re doing. For now, you can read more about today’s announcement here <[link removed]>.
Finally, to those caught up in the wild weather, I hope you’re keeping warm and dry - stay safe and please keep looking out for each other!
Thanks,
Chris Hipkins
