Dear John,
Last weekend, our members voted to endorse Bernie Sanders for President. We’re clear that we need to rise up to meet the challenges of right now, and with the powerful movement behind him, we believe he is best positioned to redefine our politics and who our government works for.
That being said, we also know this: a woman can be elected President or to any other office in this country. No question.
We’re in this together, and the long view is most important. Our goal, as always, is always to be building lasting people-power.
Here’s what we’re reading, watching, and listening to this week:
1. Bernie SandersThe title of this Medium piece is about why Bernie Sanders can beat Trump, but it’s really a thoughtful commentary about what he’s building. Check it out here. 2. Minnesota ReformerA new nonprofit, progressive media outlet covering Minnesota’s state Legislature just launched. It’s called the Minnesota Reformer. Read about it in MinnPost and add their daily newsletter to your morning routine. 3. Care WorkCare is the work that makes all work possible, but many care workers can’t afford to live where they work. Looking forward, we need bold solutions around care and justice like #UniversalFamilyCare. Read more in the Minnesota Reformer about the highest demand jobs in Minnesota that don’t pay enough. 4. Rep. Ayanna PressleyFor Black women, the personal is political. This is a powerful viral video of Congresswoman Pressley opening up about living with alopecia. Watch it here. 5. Homes for AllPolice in Oakland showed up in armored vehicles, dressed in riot gear to evict homeless mothers from a vacant house where they were squatting. We need real solutions to the housing crisis in this country, not more evictions. Read more. And follow @moms4housing on Twitter. 6. Fake NewsWhen Beltrami County became the first county in the country to reject refugee resettlement, it happened under a cloud of rumors and misinformation. Read more. 7. Soup + InstagramA couple months ago, I (Patrick) came across a recipe on Instagram for a sausage, kale, and bean soup, cheekily named Roberto. Since I saw the recipe, it’s become a wholesome internet phenomenon. Read about it – and find the soup recipe (perfect for snowy days) – here. 8. Working LessAmericans work too much, and Bernie Sanders knows it. It’s time to fight for shorter work week. We need bread and roses, after all. Read more. 9. OscarsThe Oscar nominations came out early Monday morning, and only one person of color was nominated for an acting category. This all feels familiar… #OscarsSoWhite. Read more. 10. Fine ArtsA little bit of whimsy for you on this snowy day: this Twitter thread of famous paintings with search and rescue vehicles photoshopped into them went viral this week. Find it here.
That’s a wrap. Stay safe out there.
