Despite holding a very slim majority in Congress, the Republican Party has been completely taken over by the House Freedom Caucus. Kevin McCarthy made a lot of compromises to become Speaker, and we don’t know what exactly he promised.

What we do know is the House Freedom Caucus now has an outsized influence on some of the most important committees in Congress. Despite representing about 20 percent of the GOP conference, the House Freedom Caucus now makes up…

  • 44 percent of the House Judiciary Committee and the newly created coronavirus select subcommittee
  • Just under 40 percent of GOP members of the House Oversight Committee
  • 50 percent of GOP members of the newly created select subcommittee on the “weaponization of the federal government”
  • Two out nine members of the rules committee, one of the most powerful committees in Congress

We simply cannot allow extremists like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar to hold important roles in our federal government. And despite having such a slim majority in Congress, the GOP is more than willing to let these extremists run the show.

The Republican Party cannot be trusted to govern our nation, which is why we must begin laying the groundwork now to take back the House majority in 2024.
