What!!!??? Virginia has elections in 2023?! Yes, we do. Virginia is a unique state – holding off-year elections – like Louisiana, Mississippi, and New Jersey. But the kicker is this cycle all 140 General Assembly seats are up for election. That’s 40 Senate seats and 100 House of Delegate seats.
Why should you care about Virginia’s off-year election? Because abortion.
Currently, there is a Republican-majority in the House of Delegates BUT a Democratic-majority in the Senate. That Democratic-majority is all that is stopping Gov. Youngkin from getting what he wants; a ban on abortions after 15 weeks. He’s already shared that he will “gleefully” sign any bill that will protect life.
So, let’s recap. If Republicans are able to hold and flip enough seats to gain the majority in the House of Delegates and the Senate, then Gov. Youngkin will secure a crucial win that will help him get to the next political stage; the presidential kind.
