CORRECTION: Livable California inadvertently misidentified which legislator sent a tweet criticizing SB 50. It was not Assemblywoman Lena Gonzalez, but Senator Lorena Gonzalez. We regret the error. The correct statement is below:
Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins (San Diego) has just yanked the disastrous Senate Bill 50 out of Appropriations Committee where it ran into an unexpected wall of opposition. That’s amazing, everyone. REALLY great job!
Atkins moved SB 50 to Rules Committee where she has far more sway.
We feel it will pass Rules and end up in a fist-fight on the state Senate floor over the next several days.
Senator Lorena Gonzalez, who represents heavily Latino ‘burbs south of San Diego and parts of lower San Diego, tweeted why she’s now backing off of SB 50: “This YIMBY is less likely to support the new compromised SB50. My concerns about gentrification & lack of provisions regarding affordable housing are growing as we let more cities off the hook for longer. We need more affordable units TODAY along transit routes.” @TierraGonzalez. She was immediately attacked by the fanatical trickle-down luxury housing lobby that’s financing SB 50.
We'll be in Sacramento next week with community leaders from poor and middle-class cities strongly opposing SB 50. ALL SENATORS must be reached. Go to Sacramento yourselves, or call your state senator NOW.
. Livable California is a non-profit statewide group of community leaders, activists and local elected officials. We believe in local answers to the housing affordability crisis. Our robust fight requires trips to Sacramento & a lobbyist going toe-to-toe with power. Please donate generously to LivableCalifornia.org here.
