Friend-
Graduates from Maine’s four-year colleges have some of the highest student debt burdens in the country.
The average Maine college graduate last year owed more than $32,600 in student loans. That’s the eighth-highest burden in the country, and that’s not including the criminally high interest rates.
This is one top ten ranking we should not be proud of.

When we saddle our students with debt that is impossible to repay, we set them up to fail.
Student loan debt is like a mortgage without a home. That makes it hard to buy a home, start a family, or even stay in Maine.
With the cost of living in our state rising, and wages stagnating, our young people can’t afford to stay.

We can’t solve this through half measures or platitudes. We have to be willing to tackle this crisis head on.
Middle-of-the-road candidates won’t take a stand. They will say that it’s a step too far to cancel student debt. They will say it’s not possible to ensure debt-free public college.
That’s why I’m running: to make the impossible, possible. And I’m doing it in the only way I know how: no fancy fundraisers, no corporate PAC money, no high-powered lobbyists, and no big money of any kind.
This is a people-powered movement that begins and ends with you. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
In solidarity,
