*Building a Biorefinery in Maine ? Biofine?s Plans for Lincoln*

Michael Cassata, Chief Development Officer of Biofine Technology, will join us to speak about his firm?s plans to build a biorefinery in Maine, using wood to create a liquid fuel that can be used in place of heating oil, as well as many higher-value applications.? The firm has been operating pilot plants in Maine for over a decade, including currently at the University of Maine?s Forest Bioproducts Research Institute at the Old Town pulp mill.? They now have plans to construct a biorefinery at the former mill site in Lincoln, using wood from local loggers and landowners.? This is a great opportunity to learn about the company, their timeline, and how they will fit into the region?s forest economy.?

Forestry tools to help locate and protect Globally Imperiled species in Maine

Maine?s Forest Community -

To elevate awareness and protections of globally and critically imperiled species or Forest of Exceptional Conservation Value (FECVs) in Maine, The Maine SFI Implementation Committee working with Maine Natural Areas Program (MNAP) and Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife have developed a process and tools to quickly identify potential conflicts for forestry operations with FECVs. The good news is that there are not that many FECVs in Maine as compared to many places which should make our work easier.

To help you determine if your planned forestry activity might overlap with an FECV, MNAP and IF&W we have created two tools; A list of towns that have FECVs, and a zoomable map showing approximate locations. Both of these can be accessed at: [link removed] ?

In addition, ME?s SFI Implementation Committee has developed two tools to help explain the process that MNAP and IF&W developed to check for FECVs.? Using the map and list of towns, you can help determine if planned forestry activities could intersect with FECVs. These tools are a two-page downloadable document and a ten minute video that explain the process of how to check for FECVs in relation to planned forestry activities.
