Earlier this month, I made history when I became the first out LGBTQ
member of Congress to represent Illinois. I also made history when I
became one of only two climate experts to serve in the current Congress.

The odds weren’t in our favor:

* Donald Trump carried Illinois’ 17th Congressional District in 2016 and
2020 Republicans held a massive cash-on-hand advantage over us (to the
tune of millions!)
* Election analysts in the run up to Election Day even said Republicans
were favored to win, shifting our race from Toss-Up to Lean Republican
* I was a first-time candidate running in what many expected to be a Red
Wave year where GOP candidates would be favored

But thanks to incredible supporters like you and our friends at 314 Action
– we were able to win this incredibly competitive House race and make
history!

[ [link removed] ]Whether or not Democrats can retake the majority will depend 100% on
holding battleground districts like mine. I’m excited to spend the next
two years fighting for you in Congress but I can’t do this alone. I’d
really appreciate if you could spare as little as $3 toward our first
major fundraising deadline of the year so we have the resources we’ll need
to hold this critical seat.

The reason we were able to win this toss-up district with 52% of the vote
is because of supporters like you.

The reason we were able to overcome being outspent by our GOP opponent by
more than $2 million is because of supporters like you.

The reason a career meteorologist who was almost fired from one of his
first jobs for identifying as gay is now the first out LGBTQ member of
Congress to represent Illinois in history is because of supporters like
you. There are only 11 LGBTQ members in Congress and I’m incredibly
honored to be one of them.

I know firsthand how important it is to not let our country be dragged
backwards. And I know that together, we can overcome any and all obstacles
in our path.
