One thing you may know about me is that I am a refugee.

When I was just a young child, my family escaped the Somali Civil War and took sanctuary in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years.

We didn't always have enough food or running water, but we did always hold out hope that one day we'd be able to start a new life in the United States.

At the time, I never could have imagined that one day I would run for office, nevermind that I would become the first African-born member of Congress, or that tens of thousands of people across America would be with me along the way.

I wouldn't have believed you if you told me.

Everything we've accomplished together has only ever been possible because of the support of people like you. I am incredibly grateful for that.

But the fact is that our work is far from over.

If we're going to continue building progressive power and fighting for policies and ideas that put working people first, it's going to take every single one of us. So I have to ask.
