The latest news & local updates from Maggie Throup MP

** Westminster Despatches
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Resident,

I want to update you on the very latest work I am doing as your Member of Parliament, as well as provide you with some useful information affecting our area.

We recently learnt that the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities rejected Erewash Borough Council’s most recent bid for £20 million of funding for Ilkeston. It is clear from the official feedback that Erewash’s bid lacked detail and ambition when compared to other, ultimately successful bids. Whilst this news is clearly very disappointing, I am determined to work with Erewash Borough Council to ensure that we can produce an ambitious new bid for our town to ensure that it receives funding in the future rounds.

I always enjoy travelling around the constituency and meeting with local businesses. A number of SMEs in Erewash have told me that they are increasingly under pressure to agree lengthy payment terms with larger corporations, which can lead to significant cash flow problems. I recently asked the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategies whether the Government will commit to reviewing UK payment term regulations. You can view my question in full here ([link removed]) . SMEs are vitally important to the country and our area, and I will always support them.

This time of year, many of us suffer from seasonal flu and other illnesses. Please remember that you do not always need to see a GP - you can get the right advice from a nurse or clinical pharmacist. In Derbyshire, there are now 133 more full-time equivalent clinical staff in general practice than in 2015. This includes nurses, physiotherapists and clinical pharmacists and it is crucial these are used effectively through good triage and acceptance of new and different practices. Last Tuesday, I asked the Health Secretary what his department is doing to encourage more people to book an appointment with the appropriate healthcare professional. You can view the question here ([link removed]) .

Keen readers of Westminster Despatches will know that I am passionate about diagnostics. The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Diagnostics, which I have set up, will hold its inaugural meeting on 8 February. I am pleased that the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care has confirmed that he is committed to attending one of our APPG meetings. You can view his comments here ([link removed]) .

This week the Prime Minister unveiled a new plan to improve NHS urgent and emergency services. Under these plans, 5000 new beds will be made available. As many of you will know, the 16-bed Hopewell Ward at Ilkeston Community Hospital, which was reopened to relieve winter pressures, will now be decommissioned. On Monday, I asked the Health Secretary whether this ward can remain open permanently as part of plans to increase the number of beds. You can view my intervention here ([link removed]) .

Away from the Chamber, to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day, I was one of many MPs to sign a Book of Commitment, pledging to honour the six million Jewish men, women and children who were brutally murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators. We cannot forget the events of 80 years ago and we must make sure they never happen again.

Last week, I was pleased to attend Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust’s parliamentary event. This charity carries out brilliant work in raising awareness and prevention of cervical cancer. On average 3,200 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer ever year in the UK, with more than 850 dying. Cervical cancer is largely preventable through a combination of HPV vaccination and cervical screening.

Since I last contacted you, I was lucky enough to open the Kirk Hallam Community Centre gazebo and outdoor space. This is a wonderful project and I hope that residents who use the centre and fabulous community café will enjoy socialising in this new space. If you are a Kirk Hallam reader, I would encourage you to visit the centre and sign up to some of their weekly events!

Finally, you may have seen that the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), which advises Government on vaccinations and immunisation programmes, has published their recommendations for future COVID-19 vaccination eligibility. As well as providing interim advice for planning purposes, JCVI has indicated that the ‘evergreen’ offer of the initial primary doses should become a targeted offering, rather than universal. At the same time, the offer of a booster jab to those who have only had their initial two jabs will be coming to an end. This will be on 12 February, alongside the closure of the Autumn Booster programme which began last September. I would encourage anyone who has not yet taken up the complete course on offer dependent on your eligibility, to do so as soon as possible. To book a Covid vaccination please click here ([link removed]) .

With best wishes,
Maggie Throup MP
Member of Parliament for Erewash
