Before the rains come

**Dear Friend,**
**Here in Western Kenya, the farmers I work alongside are preparing their farms for the long rainy season. I love this season, as we have lots of rainfall, it provides good conditions for crops to thrive. It’s great to see the banana seedlings and tree seedlings come to life when the rains finally arrive.**
My team and I at Ripple Effect Kenya, are supporting the farmers like Pauline (pictured above) through on-farm training and field days. Farmers like Pauline grow their knowledge of the best farming methods and crops that will give them a good harvest, nutritious food, and income.
Unfortunately, as the climate crisis worsens, the growing seasons and rainfall patterns are becoming more unpredictable and it's harder to know when exactly the rains will start. The farmers are currently gathering crops to get ready in case the rains come earlier.
With less frequent rainfall, farmers are planting vegetables that require less water such as cowpeas and amaranthus. This ensures they can grow enough food, whatever the weather brings, with any surplus to sell for vital family income.
