Dear Supporter, As an advocate for gender equity and justice, I was excited to celebrate the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in Virginia this Wednesday. This victory shows the increasing national momentum for the adoption of a constitutional amendment that protects all people from discrimination on the basis of sex. But before the ERA can be added to the Constitution, we have to overcome the hurdle of the outdated ratification deadline that was included in the federal ERA legislation passed more than 40 years ago. The good news is that the legislation has been introduced in this Congress and Speaker Pelosi has already indicated that she is committed to moving the bill! Let’s make sure members of Congress make it a priority. By adding your name to the coalition of support that has called for Congress to extend the deadline for ratification to allow for enrollment of the Amendment, you’ll be holding your elected officials to the promise that every person deserves to have an equal opportunity to work, study, live, and thrive free from sex-based discrimination. The amazing accomplishment in Virginia would not be possible without activists and advocates like you across the country, but we still have crucial work to do together to make sure this amendment is written into the constitution.
