Dear John,
The Star Tribune, Minnesota’s major newspaper, published a powerful piece on Sunday calling for permanent protections of the Boundary Waters while applauding the U.S. Department of the Interior’s recent decision to ban toxic sulfide-ore copper mining on federal land in the headwaters of the Boundary Waters for 20 years.
From the Editorial Board: 1 “But there's still work to do. Permanent protection still must be implemented to prevent future chicanery from undoing BWCA protections or letting them expire. Legislation authored by U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., would do that and merits swift passage. State lawmakers also must pass Sen. Kelly Morrison's bill [[link removed]] to put mining restrictions on state land in the BWCA watershed.”

The editorial also specifically commends our own National Campaign Chair Becky Rom for her tireless efforts to build this national movement, “Another leader deserving praise is Becky Rom, an Ely native, grandmother and former attorney who has led this David-vs.-Goliath fight against [mining company] Antofagasta.”
Thanks to the decision on Thursday, this embattled wilderness finally has a semblance of the protections it deserves and moves America ever closer to permanently protecting the Boundary Waters for generations to come.
Keep the momentum up - take action today by adding your name to this thank you card [[link removed]] to U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.
